The clients brief was to create a contemporary, exciting, energy efficient home, requiring minimum maintenance, low running costs, whilst incorporating a C19th Grade II listed windmill. Situated on the edge of the development envelope the full height of the windmill had to remain visible from the road, and its nature uncompromised. The new building seeks to enhance it by echoing the lines of the Mill in the curved central internal walls, around which the living spaces are arranged. Raft foundations provide a highly insulated base whilst protecting the shallow footings of the windmill. SIP’s form the main structure, the materials used in the external envelope in the new building were chosen for both their aesthetics and lack of maintenance - harking back to the mill's agro-industrial past, with a bold mixture of thermally treated ash, pre-patinated zinc, and carefully-chosen facing bricks placed for protection where needed.Triple glazed windows with powder-coated aluminium frames, facias and soffits were again chosen for low maintenance. The installation of a Sonnenbatterie and the use of an all-electric car augments the benefits of the PV array, which has been installed on a duo pitched roof that maximises both winter and summer solar gain. On completion, it achieved an outstanding SAP of 102% alongside a negative CO2 rating. Satisfying the brief. From the outset, the main drive from the client was for quality of design over budget and time. The client recognised that to ensure that the building detailing was thorough, it should not be rushed. Originally commissioned in 2013, construction started in spring 2015, with completion in July 2016. The Tower Mill client is quoted as saying of his new home: "Every space is delightful or has elements to delight. It is like living in a holiday home, but every day".
