The brief was to create a lifetime, 2-household home, that could operate as one unit but which would offer future capacity for some separation. The accommodation is arranged around a central courtyard, carefully designed to promote privacy for each unit, whilst also ensuring a feeling of connection and family unity. The house offers fully-accessible accommodation, including a therapy swimming-pool. Although it is a large building, care has been taken to break-down the form into sections, varying the materials and using the sloping site topography to reduce impact. This is achieved by a varied roofline and the use of a natural palette of materials, including a pre-weathered brick, clay roof tiles, thermo-ash cladding and a sedum roof. Technically the house is designed to be as energy efficient as possible with triple-glazing, above-regulation insulation, rainwater harvesting, renewable heating systems and large photovoltaic arrays with battery storage. Delayed by lockdown, completion is now due December 2020.
