The Wildlife Trust had been gifted a redundant brickworks on an old landfill site in the 1970s which has been turned into a Nature Reserve and an education building for further the Trusts aims. The building, which still contains the old brick firing-trenches, is set into the hill and therefore was too damp to be used during the winter months. Additionally toilet facilities were not up to standards required for visiting school parties. As part of the Great Fen Project, it was decided to improve the facilities at Ramsey Heights but due to the restriction on available finance, the decision to refurbish the existing building rather than build new was taken. During the planning of the refurbishment, further money was found to extend the building to accommodate new toilets and a small kitchen. The materials used were traditional in appearance and all as ecologically sustainable as possible. Many traditional products made utilising recycled materials were sourced. A tight construction programme was set as the building had to be completed within the financial year. Completion was achieved on time despite delays as a result of extremely heavy winter rainfall. The Trust opened the building in May 2008.
