We are leading the design of a deep retrofit to a family property in the heart of the Cotswolds. Originally part of the 1970’s local authority building stock, the aspirations for Meadow Place were to enhance and upgrade the property’s environmental resilience to modern standards. The client was also keen to rethink the internal spaces in order to create more flexibility and to provide multipurpose areas for their young family. Our brief was to reconfigure the internal layouts and to extend the property to the rear and to the side whilst upgrading the building’s environmental performance, using fabric first principles. We focused on improving existing insulation and ensuring good airtightness to make the property more efficient. We successfully secured planning permission for the contemporary extension within the local Conservation Area and Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The extension houses a large open plan kitchen and living space and a new informal entrance, connecting the common areas with the outdoors. On the first floor, a new bedroom and bathroom were added featuring an oriel window that overlooks the wildflower green roof and the valley beyond. The children’s bedroom features a mezzanine that houses a playing area and a cargo net reading den and a slide that links the room to the ground floor level. To minimise disruption, accelerate the programme and ensure quality control, the extension has been fabricated off-site using SIP technology. By working in collaboration with the engineers on a shared computer model, we were able to coordinate and fabricate the doors and windows at the same time as the foundations were poured on-site, which allowed for precious time and cost savings. Meadow Place is now on site.
