Built in 1891, the Everyman Theatre is Grade II listed and is the earliest surviving theatre by the prolific theatre architect, Frank Matcham. Foster Wilson Architects have restored the historic auditorium and modernised the front of house areas. Work in the auditorium included repairing the original fibrous plasterwork and scagliola and the restoration of the historic colour scheme and murals. Seats, carpets, wallpaper and drapes have been replaced with new replicas, to recover the sumptuous character of the original interior, while improving audience comfort. The theatre's technical installations have been reconfigured to be more sympathetic to the original design, while serving the needs of modern productions. The foyers have been remodelled and redecorated in a contemporary style, including new bars, counters and finishes throughout and a new helical staircase. The work was completed for the celebration of the theatre's 120th anniversary in October 2011.
