New Build
Foster Wilson Size have designed a new arts hub building in Brixton for the Brixton House Theatre (originally known as Oval House). In addition to providing a new theatre, the building includes two floors of creative arts spaces. The building is currently under construction, with completion due in Summer 2021. Our project forms part of an area wide master-plan for Somerleyton Road that includes the provision of more than 600 new homes, as well as new retail units and workspaces. The masterplan, led by Igloo Regeneration with Metropolitan Works, provides high quality housing in an attractive tree-lined street with 50% affordable housing provision. The design of the new theatre building is purposefully robust, with exposed materials that are capable of adaption to individual performances, in keeping with the spirit of studio theatre. Externally the design of the building relates to the industrial architecture of Brixton and the early street lighting of nearby Electric Avenue, with a new anodized aluminium facade that incorporates a range of lighting and signage. The new building will provide a wide range of facilities for performing artists and the local community, as well as a large public foyer that is open to Coldharbour Lane. Views of the neighbouring Nuclear Dawn mural are maintained by providing additional pavement space to the side of the new entrance.
