New Build
Unit 1, Bermondsey Exchange , 179-181 Bermondsey Street , LONDON , SE1 3UW , United Kingdom
The extension and conversion of an office building into high quality apartments for City professionals has made a major contribution to returning life into this part of the City of London, now also characterised by small shops and cafes. The dark and unpromising offices, created in the 1970s by amalgamating two 19th Century properties, have been dramatically re-worked and extended to achieve 14 light and compact apartments, now accessed off the pedestrianised alley which leads to a Wren church. A striking zinc-covered curved roof now rises at 7th floor level, below which two further new floors have been added. At ground and basement levels, in a modern interpretation of the traditional shopfront, set-back windows have been extended down to the lower floor, allowing for light and ventilation to liberate previously redundant space.
