Alteration to existing property
A House for Writing is an example of the impact that small-scale, design-lead architecture can have. A side return extension to a typical London terraced house, adds just 7m2 of additional space – yet aims to transform the house in its use of materiality, natural light and visual flair. Working with a limited budget, the challenge of this project was to provide an interesting piece of architecture in just a small area at the side of the kitchen. The client, who writes for a living was keen to have as much natural light as possible – without the over reliance on large panes of glazing, which can often be overlooked by close-lying neighbours and result in harsh and oversaturated light levels. As architects, we wanted to create a form that could diffuse the light down into the space below – whilst creating a visually striking design.
