The Environmental Innovation Hub on Durley Chine seafront for client BCP is an exemplar of low carbon building innovation. The project aims to contribute towards BCP’s ambitions to become a Green Economy Leader by helping to achieve a step change in the reduction of single-use plastics and increased levels of recycling along our stretch of coastline. The concept is based on the three key sustainable aspirations of 'reduce: recycle: re-use' where we - reduced the building size by creating external visitor space and the use of passivehouse standards to reduce consumption, heat loss and carbon emissions - used recycled groyne timber from disused beachfront breakwaters and - considered the specification of materials that were local, had low embodied energy and that could be re-used again. The project consists of single-storey public WCs and cafe and a two- storey education and welfare building as well as a large covered external exhibition space for the community.
