Work at Lewisham Hospital has included a fast track project to remodel and upgrade the existing delivery facilities on the 3rd Floor of the Maternity Department at Lewisham Hospital. The scope comprised internal reconfiguration to provide a 3 bed Close Observation Room, Assessment Room with associated ensuite WC, new Delivery Room, Staff Base, Point of Care Test Area, IV Fluids Area, Reception Area with adjacent Doctor's Work Stations, Equipment Store, CSSD Supplies Store, Consultant Office and Rest Room. 3 no. existing Delivery Rooms and associated ensuite shower facilities, including 2 no. Home from Home Rooms were completely refurbished. The Home from Home Rooms include either a permanently installed birthpool or provision for a temporary inflatable birthpool. The new Reception Area is located to provide good visual interaction with the unit entrance and an improved initial experience for patients and visitors. The Reception Area and Doctor's Work Stations combine to form an efficient, strategically positioned administrative resource for staff. All new installations were designed to comply with current HBN and HTM standards. The driving concept of the design was to provide patients with a sympathetic and reassuring environment with enhanced levels of comfort, care, privacy and dignity while providing staff with an efficient, compliant and well equipped facility. Layout, equipment, finishes and colours were discussed in detail with the users and carefully selected to fulfil these aspirations. The Delivery Unit remained fully operational throughout the works. The works were completed in a total of three phases, designed to enable the continued functioning of the department. Another project undertaken was The crisis café project which was a fast track project involving a full refurbishment with external and entrance alterations. Our brief was to convert what was an unused children’s nursery into a ‘Crisis Café’ for use by low level mental health patients. The café is located on the site of University Hospital Lewisham, and will offer people who are feeling distressed a person to talk to in a relaxed, non-clinical setting which aims to help them avoid spending extended time in the emergency department or as an inpatient at the hospital. The client was a partnership between Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and mental health charity Certitude. Briefing and design development meetings involved all parties including patient / user representatives. It was a very hands-on process, with weekly sessions held within the actual space that was to become the café, so there could be a lot of pacing out areas. This enabled even those who had little building design experience to understand the plans and be able to provide opinions and approvals quickly. This was essential to meet the very tight programme target to open the facility in time for the increased festive period mental health demand. A key requirement that came out of the consultation process was that the facility was to have the feel of a non-clinical space and it was not intended for high level mental health patients, meaning that the usual infection control and anti-ligature requirements did not have to be complied with. Another project was the Digital X-Ray project at Lewisham Hospital involved the complete demolition of the existing X-Ray Department and its reconfiguration in a phased manner to enable the X-ray department to continue operating (only losing 1 x-ray room at any time). Some temporary facilities were created in adjacent departments including patient changing rooms. The scheme included 3 Philips digital x-ray rooms, 1 Dexa scanner room and alterations to 2 ultrasound rooms as well as new waiting areas and other ancillary spaces with compliance upgrades.
