Renovation and extension of a large family home in Scotland Completed Overlooking the Isle of Arran on the west coast of Scotland, Shingle House is a large red sandstone house with a modern, charred shingle and dark stone-clad two-storey extension. The project brief was to refurbish and extend the mid-19th Century property, which had fallen into disrepair, and create a home for the family of seven. The spectacular coastal view was to be celebrated, the unused and hidden spaces of the property opened up and utilised, and an exemplar extension created. The proposals had to breathe new life into the house and bring it to modern standards, whilst respecting the original property, its rich local history and context. Like the surrounding landscape, the tone and texture of the house and extension vary dependent on the weather, and will continue to do so over time, settling into the rugged landscape. 2019 Manser Medal - Architects’ Journal House of the Year: Shortlisted 2019 Architects’ Journal Refurb of the Year:Shortlisted Architect: Flower Michelin Structural Engineer: David Narro Associates Quantity Surveyor: Baillie Knowles Partnership Local Authority: North Ayrshire Contractor: Gordon Middleton Building Contractors.
