A high density development of 124 flats, ten townhouses and 1800m2 of workspace in the first phase of English Cities Fund£s masterplan to regenerate the Millbay area of Plymouth. D3, or £Cargo£, is designed as a city block of four distinctive buildings, edging streets positively with ground level workspaces providing active street frontage. A row of townhouses on Millbay Road continues the historic context of a terrace facing the sea with flanking buildings stepping in height from four to seven storeys according to orientation, views and city scale. Within the perimeter block an internal courtyard constructed above a basement carpark is designed as a landscaped garden for workspace and residential users. Different cladding materials further emphasise the change in scale and break down the city block. The Hobart wing is finished in zinc interlocking tiles, the Phoenix wing in vertical pre-patinated copper panels and the link buildings on George Place, together with the Millbay Road townhouses, are rendered. Principle materials are complemented with timber cladding, composite aluminium/timber windows, and metal balconies. The project has been developed in line with English Partnerships sustainability criteria and is set to achieve an EcoHomes £Very Good£ rating.
