New Build
A new library, restoration of the existing town hall building and the creation of a public square and park. Won through competition, the project provides an exemplary restoration of the Town Hall and surrounding environs whilst delivering a state-of-the-art library facility in a new two storey wing. The plan carefully connects the library extension to the original building via the original main staircase, following a similar footprint of the 1902 competition wing that was never constructed. From inception the intention has been to achieve an environmentally responsible building and this has led to the full integration of passive design solutions at strategic level. The new building is principally an exposed concrete frame with a coffered floor structure providing thermal mass, whilst the heating system is powered by a biomass boiler, run on wood pellets, a recognised carbon neutral energy source. The integration of Kings Square and Central Park are now pivotal in the regeneration of the town centre and the uptake of library menbership, together with a threefold increase in use, both testify to the popularity of the new facility.
