Feilden+Mawson were commissioned in 2017 by Cadogan Estates to refurbish the Grade II listed Rossetti Studios. The studios had been designed as purpose-built artist studios by Edward Holland in 1896. Unlike many of the artist studios that were speculatively built at the end of the 19th century, Rossetti Studios were built to a high standard and remained largely intact. The building was constructed from red brick with rich terracotta and stone dressings with a pebble dashed upper floor to the distinctive circular projecting turret with red brick dressings. Many of the original architectural features have survived including slit doors for access for canvasses, galleries for storing canvasses, living accommodation, and changing rooms. This makes it something of a rarity amongst artist studios, most of which have experienced significant alternations over the years. The purpose of the refurbishment was to enhance the studios architecture and historic details, whilst renewing the services to meet the flexible and varied requirements of 21st century artists. To that end, there detailed conservation work was required particularly to existing original features including to the terrazzo and timber parquet flooring throughout. Other period features including cornices, skirtings and chimney pieces were revealed and expressed following the removal of progressive layers of services installations. Roof slate and leadwork was fully renewed giving opportunity to enhance the thermal envelope and realise energy efficiencies whilst using traditional building techniques. Kitchenettes, showers and utility areas were also upgraded to a contemporary standard and championed by the Feilden+Mawson’s own Interior Design team. Replacing a dilapidated later addition to the rear of the building, a completely new build studio was also added, which was designed in form and material to be sympathetic to the existing building and to improve the setting of this rare and historically sensitive property. We believe that Rossetti Studios is a shining example of how good design and respect for a building’s history and story, can breathe new life into it.
