Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade I, Scheduled Ancient Monument, Within a Conservation Area
Feilden+Mawson were appointed in 2017 as architects to the HLF funded Norwich Castle Keep: Gateway to Medieval England project, which aims to renovate the Grade I Listed Castle Keep, situated on a mound which is a Scheduled Monument. The Keep is currently the home of Norwich Castle Museum and the purpose of this project is to transform Norwich Castle into one of East of England’s premier heritage attractions. This notably includes increasing its visitor capacity, alongside its capacity to welcome school children with the aim of attracting 300,000 visitors per year and 30,000 school children. The renovation, alterations and associated works to the interior of the Keep, will include the reinsertion of a new principal floor, gallery space and full DDA compliant access to the roof. Feilden+Mawson has also proposed a new bridge link and the erection of an extension to the Keep as well as alterations to the Museum entrance/lobby/cafe and reception areas. The proposed works will support the long-term beneficial use of the building by creating an enhanced visitor experience and City venue. Furthermore, new digital and learning spaces will help enable the museum to pursue an innovative event and outreach programme. In 2018 Norfolk Museums Service supported by Feilden+Mawson was able to secure £9.2million in Heritage Lottery Funding.
