The existing 4/5 storey residential blocks were outdated, ineffective and unable to be economically upgraded to meet required standards, these were therefore proposed to be demolished. The new proposals called for new en-suite, self-catering student accommodation to replace the existing provision and in turn, significantly improve the appearance of the campus. The new student accommodation replaced four original 4/5 storey residential blocks on the eastern aspect of the campus and provided modern facilities, plus a greater choice of accommodation to meet the demand for a high standard of unit. The development provided 198 bedrooms within 6 bedroom/kitchen/ dining clusters, inclusive of accommodation for disabled. The design followed the natural contours of the site, stepping down from eight storeys to six, with a further four storey element linked via an ‘open space, connecting new courtyards and plazas. The building’s form of simple folded planes utilising Ibstock Throckley Smooth Buff brickwork and the regular geometric pattern of the deeply recessed windows offered a sense of scale compatible with the existing buildings. The main aim of the new landscape to the residential development was to create an attractive external environment and setting for both the new and the adjoining existing buildings, and an environment through which the students could move easily, socialise and would be conducive to learning. The landscape proposals also aimed at creating a safe environment for students both day and night through the careful use of lighting and appropriate choice and location of plant species.
