Listed Building - Grade II, New Build

Practice

Farrell & Clark LLP

3rd Floor, Brodrick's Building , 43-51 Cookridge Street , LEEDS , LS2 3AW , United Kingdom

In 2002 the University of Hull significantly expanded its campus through the purchase of the adjacent University of Lincoln site. The acquisition included a number of sub standard neglected buildings, including a group of four Grade II listed buildings, which were the original education buildings built in Hull between 1909–1913 as the City College of Education. This project saw the construction of a new entrance link, courtyard and road, and the conversion of a grade II listed building. A wide tree lined chequer paved courtyard leads from the new road access to the three storey planar glazed reception. White horizontal cantilevered brise soleil and motorised reflective blinds provide a controlled internal environment and a changing pattern of light and shade. LED lights create a dramatic night scene and highlight the contrast between the restored flanking Listed buildings and the new glazed entrance. Joseph Hillier (Sculptor) was commissioned to create a thought provoking installation for the courtyard entitled ‘Moving Matter’, following a national design competition. Contrasting the glass link to the refurbished Nidd building demonstrates that old buildings can both be adapted to a contemporary use and extended sympathetically without compromise. Value: £4.5m
