The straw bale house is situated on an elevated plot within the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Lincolnshire Wolds between the market towns of Louth and Horncastle. The dwelling is orientated southwest to take advantage of the expansive views across the rolling countryside. A generous loggia stretches the entire width of the primary facade, transitioning between the external landscape and the interior of the home. All of the main living spaces open onto the loggia. This sheltered exterior space also provides shade to the extensive glazing during the summer while permitting solar gain to heat the dwelling during the winter when the sun is lower throughout the day. The straw bale construction for the solid wall elements of the building is a Passivhaus-certified component. It is structural, contains only non-processed renewable materials, has no thermal bridges, easily achieves airtightness and saves several tons of CO2 compared to conventional construction methods. The wall system provides superior indoor air quality, creating a healthy indoor microclimate with even temperatures: warm in winter and cool in summer. A photovoltaic panel array provides power. An air-source heat pump complements this to meet the home's minimal heating requirements.
