When visiting the site, there was not a single vista that we did not want to capture, so we created a design that exposes all of the habitable rooms to the 360 degree views from the house. By raising the house up off the ground level we have captured the panorama across the Southern Ocean from the living area and the views back to the rolling hills are no longer obscured by the site's natural gradient. The entrance to the house via a central void running the full height of the dwelling. By placing the vertical circulation in the centre of the plan, the facade is left completely free of obstructions out to the surrounding landscape in all directions. The facade is punctuated by 3 large openings creating individual loggia spaces on the plan, bringing the sounds, smells and breeze into the home and reinforcing the building's connection with the landscape and seascape. Materials have been chosen that compliment the hues and tones of the surrounding context to firmly root the building on to the site. Photovoltaic panels are utilised to generate the majority of the home's power requirements. This is supplemented by a wind turbine at the elevated section at the entrance to the site. Power generated throughout the day is stored in a Powerwall lithium-ion storage system, which then delivers electricity to the home in the evening.
