Thorpe Road Dental Practice (later renamed St James Dental Centre) were looking to expand and contacted etc Design Ltd upon finding a former Public House for conversion. To accommodate the client’s requirements to provide 6 dental surgeries, a sedation clinic and recovery area, decontamination suite to HTM 01-05, x-ray room, waiting areas and staff room with changing facilities, the building required a rear two storey extension and internal remodelling. The proposed building design retained the existing front brick façade with the existing curved front entrance lobby, rendered white to give the building street presence and to provide a visual connection with the new white rendered rear extension. Once the practice moved into their new building, they renamed to St James Dental Centre, continuing to provide dental care for NHS Norfolk patients. The building conversion addressed both the client and local PCT requirement to provide a forward-thinking inclusive access designed dental practice close to the city centre. The completed project was recognised by the local Civic Society and was awarded a Commendation in the commercial category of the Norwich Society Biennial Design Awards! etc Design Ltd were appointed to provide a full architectural service which included; feasibility and concept designs, obtaining planning and building regulation approvals, tender and contract procedures, administering the building contract and handover.
