The Graduate School of Education at the University of Bristol is a forward thinking organisation committed to sustaining the highest standards of research, teaching and consultancy in the field of education. Since the school first moved into 35 Berkeley Square in 1965 the field of education has changed enormously both in terms of pedagogic approach and the technology available to support student learning. This project aims to use the refurbishment of the school to update the teaching and learning spaces available to meet the needs of teaching and learning in the Twenty First Century. The project will focus in particular on how current developments in ICT can be integrated into the classroom environment. Our initial analysis of the building revealed a number of opportunities for improving both the environment and the operation of the building. We have worked closely with the University to examine the process of teaching and learning and to develop new ways to integrate ICT within the learning process. Working alongside other members of the design team including Arup and Turner & Townsend we have examined the existing building and developed designs to improve natural daylighting, environmental performance and everyday opeartion of the building.
