Knoll House 2011 takes on the re-working of a ubiquitous and under-appreciated dwelling type: the (pink) 1970s ‘chalet bungalow’ on a modest budget. Not everything could be changed, so we concentrated on the interface between the house and its garden – the client transformed the garden and we concentrated on the spaces that could connect with it. The conservatory was sold on Ebay and replaced with an even smaller extension. This modest addition both embraces the garden through its roof form and window seat, and connects back to the body of the house more substantially by careful choices of material. The re-clad & insulated box dormer engages with new cladding at the lower level, re-ordering and ‘grounding’ the façade. Large glazed doors link the re-worked interiors to the new garden
