The Garden House is a simply conceived one bedroom dwelling sited in the lee of the last fragment of a Victorian Rectory garden wall. The house is intentionally a low profile building, more akin to a garden structure or cricket pavilion overlooking the garden. It is single aspect, with two main rooms (kitchen/living room and bedroom) facing south through large openings, under a shading verandah and over the secluded garden. The frame of the verandah is continued over a terrace shared with the Old Rectory and will eventually be covered with wisteria and clematis. The aim was also to create a sustainable dwelling with easily obtainable and affordable technologies, whilst harnessing the natural energy available through siting and aspect. The well insulated, single storey volume is heated by wet underfloor heating, powered by an air source heat pump.
