The building is designed on two principle floors, together with a gallery and technical teaching spaces/walkways at high level. Smaller teaching, storage and department administration areas are located on the ground floor with the flexible larger multi purpose teaching area at first floor level. Telescopic seating is accessed from either the first floor or upper gallery level. Technical teaching spaces are also provided to the rear of the multi purpose area where sound mixing, lighting and production is taught, together with lighting gantry/catwalks in the roof area. The design has taken full account of health and safety issues to enable these technical teaching spaces to be fully accessible to pupils. The external from of the building follows the internal functions, which meet the technical space requirements. However the elevations have been designed to be sympathetic with the adjoining high standard of buildings, but also to provide an up to date facility for St. Mary’s School for the future. The elevations have been designed with fairfaced brickwork at the lower levels, and interspersed with rendered and terracotta panels at higher levels to provide scale, interest and quality to the proposed building. The pitched roof is designed to incorporate technical areas and formed with plain tiled roof pitches to match and reflect the adjacent school buildings.
