Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II

Practice

Edge Design Workshop Ltd

7 Royal Well Place , CHELTENHAM , Gloucestershire , GL50 3DN , United Kingdom

EdgeDesignWorkshop were approached to convert this Grade II listed Regency town house which has been in office use for several years back into a single family home. The house forms the end property in a small terrace of three listed buildings along one of the most important and historic roads within Cheltenham town. In order to restore the property and provide a home that accommodates the needs of 21st century family life, Edge proposed an open plan design at basement level despite the low ceiling height with a two storey glazed extension. The proposed kitchen/dining area located at lower floor level continues the elegance and proportion of the rooms above and provides direct access from the kitchen to the rear garden through a courtyard space. The two garden areas are connected by a grand shallow pitched staircase which creates a strong visual link through the garden to the rear boundary wall. The proposed rear extension is clad in ashlar stone, referencing a clear historic connection to the period of construction of the existing property as well as highlighting its own identity. The glazed ‘wall’ facing the rear garden allows natural daylight to reach the kitchen and dining room at lower floor level using a minimal and contemporary system where the glass acts as the structure.
