Cheltenham
Within a Conservation Area, Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II*
7 Royal Well Place , CHELTENHAM , Gloucestershire , GL50 3DN , United Kingdom
The main Cheltenham College campus fronts Bath Road within the centre of Cheltenham, and comprises a range of historic buildings (all Grade II* or Grade II listed) and a large sports field. The site forms part of Cheltenham’s Central Conservation Area and is only part of a wider College Campus that extends into the neighbouring area. The site is a key feature of the conservation area and a landmark within Cheltenham. Cheltenham College are undertaking a comprehensive refurbishment and reorganisation of its senior school kitchen and dining facilities. Much of the kitchen and dining areas had been affected by internal alterations carried out in the mid-20th century when less consideration was given to the status of the building as a heritage asset. It is now intended to provide a comprehensive approach to not only solve the current problems faced by the College, but to give the building a more sympathetic treatment and acknowledge its importance as a heritage asset for the site and Cheltenham as a whole. The design proposal was primarily contained to internal alterations which included partial demolition of walls; creation of new openings; new partitions; installation of new cooking equipment; provision of new cold stores and prep areas; a new mezzanine floor; roof lights (within the Hardy Lecture Theatre) and additional extraction equipment. Externally the only change was to alter the entrance into the kitchen/dining area (Quad); and changes to the roof that include new and replacement extraction equipment plus new roof lights.
