New Build
East Architecture, landscape, urban design Ltd
Unit 3.3 , First Floor , Bayford Street Industrial Estate , LONDON , E8 3SE , United Kingdom
‘Park House’ is a new mixed use building for a housing association and hotel operator in West Ham Lane, Stratford. The building, designed as a singular brick envelope containing a mix of uses, holds apart-hotel spaces, residential units, community facilities, and a new café and restaurant. A rooftop pavilion gives views over the Olympic Park, legacy spaces and the city around. The café and community uses are located to provide new public spaces complementing those within Stratford recreation ground directly opposite. The building design has been informed by an urban design led approach so that judgements about material arrangements, entrances, height and massing are informed by and relate to the surrounds. The project seeks to restate some of the positive aspects of the existing building, such as the formally strong West Ham Lane elevation, the use of brick as a locall significant material, and the use of scale at the ground floor. Canopy structures are designed as smaller buildings appearing at entrances and roofs, where these are to be experienced close up. These enclosures are places where choices can be made to enter, rest, meet, or enjoy spectacular views across the changing landscape of the city. The project won the New London Architecture Awards 2013 for best hotel project
