East were appointed by The Royal Borough of Greenwich to develop a road corridor and public realm improvements project for Eltham High Street Eltham. East led a multidisciplinary team to carry out concept proposals, consultation, detailed design and implementation of a major scheme to transform Eltham High Street into a high-quality and sustainable urban environment fully accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. The project includes substantial improvement at a key public space at Passey Place and improvements to other pedestrian links off the High Street. TfL have provided phased funding under its ‘Major Schemes’ initiative. The over-arching aim was to catalyze the regeneration of Eltham Town Centre and secure the greatest possible social and economic benefits by improving the public realm in line with the Eltham Masterplan. The designs at Eltham High Street includes a range of place specific improvements within an historic environment Key high visibility moments within the High Street relate to the history and identity of the place. The large Portland stone Eltham sign makes a public space between the 19th century lychgate and tramsheds. At the other end of the street large timber signs will mark the threshold between ‘town and country’. The 1930’s Courtauld Institute at Eltham Palace has influenced the £7m package of works relied on funding from TfL and the Borough to be brought together around an agreed strategy which East led.
