Tunbridge Wells
£0.5m to £0.99M
The brief for this project required contemporary, flowing, well proportioned internal spaces, plenty of light and strong visual connections to the established garden. Set in a secluded Kent village, this 1960's house and granny annexe were remodelled to become a spacious but intimate family home influenced by the client's Danish heritage. The main entrance to the house is via a walled courtyard into a new double height entrance hall with curved staircase and galleried landing linking ground and first floor spaces. Small extensions to the front and rear square-off the plan to make a simple T-shape form. The old cellular layout was opened up to create generously proportioned, interlinking reception rooms orientated to the terrace, pond and garden. A pergola on the south elevation diffuses strong sunlight, extends the living space and blends boundaries between inside and out. Working with a local proactive main contractor the existing house was stripped to it's shell and upgraded using environmental construction methods and incorporating low maintenance materials; Larch cladding, a slate roof with solar panels, sheep's wool insulation, underfloor heating below oak and stone flooring, a double-sided woodstove. Eco paints are also used throughout. Bespoke fitted furniture was designed together with the client and made in close collaboration with a local joiner. This project successfully exceeds the initial aims and expectations, achieved through close collaboration between the Architect, client and the main contractor. The end result is a well proportioned, calm and contemporary home, which responds to its setting and effortlessly embraces this unique garden.
