Our ‘Tower of Love’ pavilion on the Tower Festival Headland, close to North Pier and below Blackpool Tower, is the first building to be built on the Golden Mile for a great many years. It provides a focal point for visitors; a large restaurant and local information office at promenade level, with registry offices and ceremony hall above. In collaboration with landscape designers LDA Design, dRMM made proposals for Blackpool Regeneration for a number of pavilion buildings to be set within a new surreal landscape along Blackpool’s seafront: an artificial dunescape, fantastical outsized sculptures, and a spectacular recreation of the northern lights to enhance the Blackpool Illuminations experience. The pavilions are to be located along ‘inland pier’ street axes – a masterplanning strategy intended to stitch the local communities into the regeneration proposals. Standing on a stepped concrete plinth containing recycled and phosphorescent glass, the engineered timber building is clad in gold stainless steel shingles. The expressive form and detailing is a celebration of Blackpool’s renowned exuberance and the bracing coastal weather combined with sustainable construction. The telescopic wedding tower features large picture windows to enable visitors, and couples exchanging vows, the view of the Atlantic or of Blackpool Tower illuminations.
