Dress for the Weather were asked to develop an arts and interior strategy for four sets of rooms within the new Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences building at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The four projects cover waiting areas, interview rooms, adolescent social spaces and a drop in centre for children and their parents. Each room type presents different challenges and parameters, and each requiring a different strategy with regards to the needs and ambitions of staff and patients. Our proposals are all built on the experience of these rooms – how art and architecture can improve the experience and atmosphere of these spaces but also how design can articulate and enhance day to day use of these spaces. Interior strategies reference the wider interior design alongside one-off sculptural artworks and bespoke furniture that contribute to a positive experience of the new hospital. All elements have been delivered in high quality materials that provide robust solutions to an ambitious approach overall.
