Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
This project is for a refurbishment and extension of a large residential property on the shore of Port Ellen, Islay as well as the transformation of a derelict barn in the grounds to create luxury self catering holiday accommodation. The significant alterations and extension to the back of the property create a new kitchen, dining and utility space that spills out to a new garden terrace. The extension makes use of light from different directions with a carefully composed rear elevation that uses the physical context of its neighbours and main house as constraints. The more industrial and ‘back-land’ forms of the area also inspired the aesthetic and form of the new work. The new plan allows for a circuit of the house through generous volumes where before it consisted of small, unconnected rooms. The barn alteration involved treating and repairing roof joists and re-slating. A new timber frame sits within the original stone walls and forms an open living, kitchen and dining space to the ground floor and two new bedrooms above. A double height, roof lit space gives a generosity to the living room and is complimented by dropping the cills of the original windows to create a much lighter front elevation. A new extension creates an internal staircase, where before it was external. Slate to the new gable returns on the roof pitch and runs continuously over the existing barn roof structure. Below this the curtain glazing creates a light addition to the rear elevation.
