StairWELL, sponsored by the Singapore Design Council involves cross disciplinary collaboration between architects, psychologists and neurology experts. The research project explores design strategies that encourage people to use stairs instead of lifts or escalators. According to the World Health Organization, a significant portion of the population fail to meet the recommended physical activity levels (leading to health complications downstream) highlighting the importance of promoting active lifestyles in the built environment. The StairWELL experiment employs a rigorous empirical methodology to test various interventions related to visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, including colored lighting, nature sounds, natural aromas, and biophilic elements. This study is staged in the atrium of Mediacorp's headquarters, designed by Maki & Associates and DPA; it employs footfall counting, psychological surveys, and eye tracking technology to collect actionable data. The results of the study have informed an evidence-based toolkit for the design of staircases which promote physical activity and wellbeing. By creating more engaging and enjoyable stairways, designers can help encourage people to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routines.
