Souldern Road. London Situated in a Conservation area at the edge of Brook Green in West London, this Victorian house was DOS’s first residential refurbishment project in London. Due to the borough’s strict Planning constraints, we chose to delimit ourselves by retaining the overall structure of the existing house, whilst playing with the potential of a new rear facade extension. This took form as a glass box, enclosing the double-height dining room and also a cantilevered shear wall, which serves to realign the house on a north-south axis whilst acting as a support for the new internal staircase. The facade arose as a natural extension of the house’s existing geometry, allowing us to play with contrasts of material and level to create a delightful transition between the outdoor and indoor spaces.
