The proposals for this mixed use scheme include new build retail units with flats above ranged around a large courtyard in the centre of the site. New retail units with large glazed timber windows line the arched walkway linking St. Mary’s Wynd and the courtyard. The retail units opening into the courtyard contrast with a more traditional shop front window and door. The project involved the complete refurbishment and conservation of the existing buildings on the site, together with the removal of 20th century infill buildings to the rear of the site. The new build scheme had to be sensitively designed to enhance the Grade II * Listed Buildings and the surrounding historic fabric of this central Hexham site. Remains of the Abbey Precinct wall form the rear boundary to the site.
