The University of Derby appointed Donald Insall Associates to write a Conservation Management Plan to guide its proposals for a new campus in the 18th century spa town of Buxton. The Devonshire Royal Hospital, which formed part of the site, had originally been designed for the 5th Duke of Devonshire as stables around a large circular exercise yard by John Carr of York. The yard was later covered over by Robert Rippon Duke’s heroic dome in the 19th century as part of the conversion to a hospital promoting the health-giving properties of Buxton’s water. DIA’s strategy for the conversion to 21st century educational use has maintained the building’s significance in a project for which we advised on consents and grant applications, and generally guided the process for adaptive re-use and regeneration of this landmark building.
