Buckshaw Hall was constructed as a timber-framed house in the mid 17th century, but by the end of the 20th century was in a state of partial collapse and had had to be heavily shored. It had been ‘lost’ during the war years within a giant munitions site and was only re-discovered in the 1950s, when it was listed Grade II* and placed on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk register. Based on a detailed analysis of the original frame, DIA agreed a conservation strategy with English Heritage, which would avoid reinstating harmful 19th century changes and enable a healthier reinterpretation of the original structure. The extensive programme of rebuilding and repair, which included substantial work to the oak frame using traditional techniques, meant that the collapsed east elevation could be reconstructed and the surviving external envelope be sympathetically re-presented.
