Saved by our clients from the Buildings at Risk register, Grade I listed Blencow Hall incorporated two ruinous late-16th century fortified towers. Donald Insall Associates was appointed as conservation architect to advise on the ruinous towers and to work with a local architect who was adapting the Hall for holiday accommodation. We saw both towers as structures capable of reoccupation within the new use for Blencow. For the south tower we designed a new recessed glass balcony to respect the “slight” and its role in the Hall’s history. The slight was stabilised by the insertion of recessed balconies. The masonry of both towers was consolidated and their crenellations reconstructed. New roofs, staircases and floors were constructed within the ruins. Blencow Hall was featured as an exemplar by English Heritage in its publication Constructive Conservation in Practice.
