The Practice has been closely involved with the Bath Spa since 1987 when the core historic 18th century buidlings required a rescue repair, having stood abandoned for many years on health and safety grounds. The stone cleaning, structural stabilision and repair, together with the restoration of the pitched roof of the Hot Bath and missing decorative features to the Cross Bath, won a Europa Nostra Award for Conservation. Since 1997 the Practice's involvement has been as part of Sir Nicholas Grimshaw's team. Donald Insall Associates have had a major role in resolving the planning contex and Listed Building issues for the contemporary, Millennium Fund supported building in the heart of the World Heritage City. They were also responsible for the design and integration of new functions within the two major historic pool buildings (the Hot Bath and the Cross Bath) and alterations to the other three surviving Listed Buidings on the site. The work was informed by very careful site analysis and historical assessment and included extensive negotiations with local amenity groups, the Local Authority, English Heritage and others.
