Andor Technology is a global company based in Belfast. It has grown rapidly since it’s origins in Queens University Belfast. It sells high performance digital cameras to research facilities across he world. This is the second building designed by d-on architects ltd for Andor Technology. The building is a 5,000 m2 technology facility providing research facilities, laboratories, clean rooms, clean production facilities, corporate & office facilities. The project was procured in partnering with a developer / contractor where programme and cost were critical factors. Our close relationship with Andor Technology gave them the confidence to allow us to use an architectural language which was appropriate for their company ethos. The design concept was for the building on a site elevated above the city on the slopes of Black Mountain was to create a great curing roof that echoed the land forms around and that gave shelter to the various facilities contained within. The front of the building addressed the city below with unbroken panoramic views. A large wall bisected the curving roof creating a chasm and a double height space that allowed access within and a central area to orientate and navigate within the building. A large blue cube was suspended within this space which contained the cameras, the end product of a process of research, development and manufacture, all of which took place in this building. The cube was like a pin hole camera capturing light, the basic principle in Andor’s hi-tech cameras. All visitors and staff enter the building beneath this cube. Art work on the wall commissioned from a local artist is both a constellation and a double helix, where Andor started (looking at stars) and where Andor have developed (medical research).
