Unit 6, Anfre Estate , Route de la Garenne , St Peter Port , Guernsey , GY1 2RL
The brief was to create an energy efficient and sustainable family home on a densely planted site, zoned to preclude development. Following a 4 year battle with planning, a successful appeal set a new precedent to local policy. The dwelling is designed to maximise natural light and solar gain, minimise overlooking and ground contact, avoiding numerous root protection areas of surrounding trees, and sunk into the natural topography of the site, within a clearing in the trees. (hence 'The Glade'). A basement utilises existing excavation, with the ground floor structure built from Guernsey granite, sourced on site. Lime render highlights the negative space carved for the porch and carport. A steel frame structure cantilevers above the eastern side fully planted as a living wall with a mix of 13 native species camouflaging the building within the surrounding tree canopy and providing an acoustic and pollution buffer to the nearby roads, plus additional thermal benefits. It reflects the character of the overall site; surrounded by high granite walls with mature vegetation above. A double height glazed link accommodates the vertical circulation and breaks the overall mass between the cedar clad, shed like form that floats above the western side. The arrangement offers open plan living, maintaining vertical connections with a direct relationship to external amenity, whilst providing intimate pockets between. A natural pallet has been selected throughout, an internal skin of locally reclaimed brick is coated with lime slurry, raw pigment plasters line the walls, with grey limestone to the floors, oak joinery, machined brass ironmongery, a bespoke steel staircase, and a reclaimed granite trough as the cloakroom basin. Where possible local materials and fabrication has been utilised to demonstrate the skill-set and workmanship available on island, and the quality that can be achieved within the budget and twelve month timescale.
