Previously a derelict single-block bungalow sat on this compact site with uninterrupted south coast views. The brief sought to maximise the views and increase the floor area to accommodate an open-plan four-bedroom family home, constructed over two phases. It was important to not overdevelop the site in order to sustain sufficient external amenity and to preserve a traditional frontage to the street. Phase 1 was only a small extension to the existing footprint, yet the useable floor area has more than doubled. A flat roof to the rear gives a generous elevated living space with a double height void to the dining area below, and a large opening glazed roof above. The approved phase 2 can be constructed at any time with minimal disruption. Sitting on a similar footprint to a previously demolished garage block, it will balance the proportion of the phase 1 development.
