Our Manchester studio, located on King Street, entered the Manchester Flower Show 2019, creating a temporary installation titled ‘Votes for Women’ in a parking bay as part of the King Street Festival on the 1 and 2 June. DLA were awarded best ‘Pocket Park’ by judges from RHS Garden Bridgewater. The Concept: Votes For Women Flowers have become a powerful symbol in times of resistance. The power of the flower has been harnessed to support some of the most fraught battles for human rights in history. In Manchester, there is a proud connection to the suffragettes’ fight for women’s rights. This pocket garden celebrated the achievements of incredible women who have fought for women’s rights and of Pankhurst’s fight to win the right to vote in particular. The installation was a playful interpretation of the march of the suffragettes to celebrate women’s political history encouraging visitors to think about the battles for basic equal rights occurring across the world still to this day. We were pleased to be able to donate the planters to Co-op Academy Manchester for use in their school allotment. Special thanks to I.J.McGill Transport for donating their unwanted pallets.
