New Build
The new church entrance design retains the existing brick structure with a new tent-like folded canopy floating above. The canopy is carried on a clearly expressed tubular steel structure and is separated from the masonry structure below by glazing. The foyer area is increased by extending the enclosure with visually lightweight, part glazed, screens. The canopy echoes the form of folded hands and extends beyond the immediate enclosure reaching out to the street to welcome the congregation. The entrance provides a strong visual signpost for this previously understated church. The folded canopy slopes down towards the entrance to draw people into the building. The crisp detailing and angular form of the standing seam metal sheeting and tubular steel structure of the canopy is softened by the use of diagonal ash boarding to the canopy soffit. The project received a Commendation under the City of Worcester Award Scheme.
