The ArtBox is a purpose built art teaching facility for Furzedown Primary School in London SW17. Enthusiastic, optimistic teachers and pupils, combined with tight budgets inspired us to create this flexible, creative environment. Built over an existing flat roof area of the school, the ArtBox concentrated on space and light to achieve an enjoyable working environment: - North lights allow lots of even natural light in to the studio - The elevated ceiling gives a sense of space without adding to the visual mass of the building from outside - Blinds enable near black-out and solar control - Dedicated spot lights enable still life scenes to be set up The ArtBox is constructed to operate efficiently: - Timber structural insulated panels (SIPs) reduce energy loss and air leakage - Under floor heating eliminates the need for radiators and maximises display space The project is identified from the school grounds with signage on the grey render, a modest salute to the Bauhaus. Small letters and a small building for small people, but with big aspirations and exciting ideas!
