CrossFit Wandsworth, in London SW18 was a project full of opportunities and challenges. It is a ‘no-nonsense 'box'’ where up to 16 members train in set classes to high intensity workouts, using body weight resistance exercises or free-weights. Crossfit has a big space, which is used to its maximum potential with a rig and apparatus for a multitude of workouts or routines. The challenge was to make this large space work on a very tight budget. The changing, WC and shower core was designed to be as efficient as possible, benefiting from the staggered turn-around of classes. It makes the best use of every inch of space. Corridor and circulation areas double up as places to store coats and bags. Services were kept very simple and designed to be as efficient as possible. Materials and finishes were selected to work where required, with many of the existing surfaces of the building shell retained where possible. In total, the fit-out costs came in at approximately £100K, including fixtures, fittings and equipment. The total letable area of the property is 350m2. This gives an impressive installation rate of £285/m2, a very important consideration for any start-up company looking to secure its future in a competitive business market.
