This project involved a comprehensive renovation and addition of a 1950s house to create a contemporary four bed house. The build journey of the project was featured in Episode 7 of the Channel 4 show ‘Best Laid Plans’ in November 2017. The property occupied a large corner plot but did not make the most of its aspect or orientation, we therefore suggested switching the focus of the house, by removing the garage and replacing it with a single-storey kitchen extension to the southwest and creating a large carport and driveway to the north-east. This will engage the under-used south-west garden with the house as well as creating a kitchen/dining/living area that is appropriate for a modern living. This broken plan area is supported by a downstairs snug/office and utility room to create a practical yet striking dwelling. Our design approach celebrates the mid-century and arts & crafts origins of the house. The two storey extension and porch, constructed of Cotswold stone, feature innovative triangular dormer windows and large quoined buttresses. The single storey kitchen pavilion has a vaulted ceiling with a hipped roof clad in handmade tiles referencing the historic roofs of the vernacular agricultural buildings found throughout the Cotswolds.
