New Build, Sited in AONB, Within a Conservation Area
The new building provides a quayside handling facility for the local shellfish fishing industry to provide hygienic landing, catch handling, temporary chiller storage and packing facilities, thus reducing the high rate mortality rate of some species. The facility also allows collection of shellfish by bulk transporters for onward processing. The site lies in a conservation area and overlooks an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty along the North Norfolk Heritage Coastline. The site lies within an area at risk from tidal flooding. Measures have been taken to protect the building from most flood events by using flood barriers at door openings. Untreated cedar boarding is used for external cladding fixed with gaps in between the boards and secured to a stainless steel framework incorporating a cavity to allow rapid drying out in the event of flooding. The roof form permits ventilating and cooling equipment to be housed within the roof space and allows to ridge to be kept as low as possible. Natural slates have been used for the roof coverings.
