Listed Building - Grade II*, New Build
All Saints church dates from the early 14th century and is listed Grade II*. No significant alteration to the church has taken place for almost 600 years. For a number of years the church had recognised the need to provide modern-day facilities not only for the congregation but also for the broader community in order to encourage increased use of the church building. To meet this need a brief was developed with the church to provide a meeting room, kitchen facilities and a meeting room. Options to accommodate the new facilities internally were explored but impact on the interior proved unacceptable and the decision was made to build an extension. By analysis of the character of the existing building the following criteria were determined: ? The form of the extension(s) should read as part of the sequence of additive forms that is the character of the church. ? By necessity the bulk of the extension should match the scale of the existing north aisle, even though this would dwarf the utilitarian function of the space enclosed. ? Extending beyond the aisle north wall should be treated as a secondary extension reducing in scale, in a similar manner in which the south porch relates to the south aisle. ? Stylistically the new work should reflect the age we live in making use of modern skills and technology and not to attempt a form of pastiche. ? Materials should be chosen from a wide palette of traditional materials seen throughout the church and comprise sheet metal roof (pre-weathered zinc) and lime rendered walls on a hand made brick plinth. Windows are powder coated steel set in natural stone surrounds.
