In 2010 construction began on the redevelopment of Milton Court in the City of London. The scheme represents the most important new cultural and academic project in the City since the completion of the Barbican, directly to the south of the new building. The scheme provides a new world-class performance facility for the Guildhall School, including a 625 seat concert hall, 225 seat theatre, 120 seat studio theatre, and associated rehearsal, administrative and teaching spaces. The scheme also includes a 36-storey private residential tower offering unprecedented urban living of the highest quality. The scheme is arranged into two distinct elements: The School, which occupies the entire footprint of the site and is formed into a 6 storey block, and the residential tower, located at the eastern end of the site. The tower has been positioned to minimise any detrimental loss of daylight to the residential units of the Barbican and the massing has been carefully composed with due consideration to long distance views, particularly those from the Thames. An atrium bisects the site and marks the primary circulation to the school while distinguishing it from the tower.
